AARP to Honor Individuals Who Serve AAPIs Age 50-plus

AARP's 3rd annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Hero Awards acknowledge the extraordinary staff and volunteers of nonprofit organizations that serve AAPIs age 50-plus. AARP is seeking nominees who are important contributors to their organizations, who make a difference and whose stories inspire others to do more in their communities. Nominations may be submitted now until May 31.

Ten finalists—five staff members and five volunteers—will be chosen from the submitted nominees by a committee comprised of AARP staff. One staff member and one volunteer will be awarded $1,000, and their respective organizations will also each receive a $1,000 cash prize. Each winner and their organization will also be featured in a cinematic 3- to 5-minute short film to be promoted by AARP.

Eligible nominees include any non-senior management employee or volunteer of a non-profit organization that serves Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders age 50-plus. Nominees can be any age and ethnicity. The awards are open to the public and there is no fee to submit a nomination.

March with your fellow Pinoys in a ceremony at the Philippine Center Kalayaan Hall; receive a PGRAD 2018 medal, a Filipino diploma, and a Citation from the New York Assemblyman Brian Bardwell.
Kindly register with your complete name (which will appear in your diplomas and Citation), institution, and program completed.
We request you to be in your academic regalia (gown and cap) during the ceremony.
Admission is free, and you are entitled to bring up to two companions to the event.

Duyog Ramadan: A Unity Iftar Event

Please join the Philippine Consulate General in New York and Kinding Sindaw Heritage Foundation, Inc. for this celebratory event. For the second year in a row, Kinding Sindaw will be partnering with the Philippine consulate to promote the heritage of the Filipino Muslims and create a dialogue with this community that is lesser known within the Filipino community as a whole. This wonderful gathering is a potluck event, please feel free to bring food to share in breaking the fast.

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is when the holy fasting month of the Muslim world is celebrated, Ramadan. It is said in the Five Pillars of Islam that fasting during the daylight hours from dawn to sundown is required during the month of Ramadan. Within the Philippine, most of the Muslim people in the Philippines are from Mindanao. There are 13 ethnolinguistic Muslim tribes in Mindanao who will be fasting this Ramadan season.

Muslims and Christians come together to break the fast at sundown May 31, to symbolize unity amid growing Islamophobia, which is the conflict in Marawi city and all over the world. Thus it is a beautiful month to celebrate peace and harmony with the Muslim brothers and sisters across the nations.

In New York, Philippines Showcases 7,641 Islands in Tourism Expo at Grand Central Terminal, Crossroads of the World

New York -- New York’s iconic Grand Central Terminal will provide the backdrop to showcase the 7,641 islands that make up the Philippines, which is promoting its vacation destinations.  With a launch by Philippine Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo Teo, the Explore Islands Philippines runs from Wednesday, May 9, through Saturday, May 12.    

On May 9, Explore Islands Philippines kicks off at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony graced by Her Royal Highness Princess Katarina of Yugoslavia and Serbia. Secretary Teo will be joined by Philippine Ambassador to the United Nations Teodoro Locsin Jr., President of the Philippine Tourism Promotions Board Cesar Montano, as well as other high-ranking officials from New York State and the Philippines.

Speakers from the Philippine Tourism will talk on May 9-10 about various tourism initiatives including beautiful destinations, students and millennial tours, diving tourism, cuisine, retirement, as well as Philippine arts, culture, and history.  The flagship carrier of the Philippines, Philippine Airlines, will also give a special presentation.

Explore Islands Philippines will celebrate arts and culture in the final two days,  
May 11-12, showcasing artists and artisans from the United States and the Philippines.  Day 3’s program will include presentations from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Parangal Dance Company, Philippine martial artists, weavers, artisans, and fashion designers.  

The expo is free to the public and is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The event’s venue, Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall can be easily accessed by the Pershing Square, 42nd Street entrance. Grand Central can be reached by all major subways (4, 5, 6, 7 as well as the S train).

Explore Islands Philippines is presented by JS Productions, the Philippine Department of Tourism, and the Philippine Tourism Promotions Board.
